Kayak Care & UV Protection
Because kayaks and their components are frequently exposed to intense sunlight and UV rays, a small amount of preventative maintenance can go a long way in protecting your kayak and extending its lifespan.
We recommend cleaning your kayak at both the beginning and end of each season and applying a plastic-safe UV protectant. This helps shield the HDPE hull from sun damage, prevents the material from drying out, and significantly extends the life of the hull while reducing the risk of cracking.
When you first receive your kayak, it’s also a good idea to treat the seat (including the straps, backrest, and base) as well as any fabric or cord components such as rudder lines, pulleys, and bungee cords with an outdoor fabric UV protectant spray. Saltwater and prolonged sun exposure can dry out these materials over time, so this treatment helps maintain flexibility and reduces the chances of tearing or wear. For best results, reapply the spray at the beginning, middle, and end of each kayaking season.
Finally, we recommend waterproofing your kayak after the first season of use and at the start of each season thereafter. This process involves removing the mounted hardware, applying a small amount of marine-grade silicone sealant beneath the hardware and along the screw threads, and then reinstalling the hardware securely. Once applied, allow the silicone to cure for approximately 24 hours in a dry, shaded area before using the kayak.
